How many times have we been told to drink more water? But do we really understand the rationale behind why?

In the context of CrossFit, showing up to workouts dehydrated can reduce our performance up to 20%!  Water is also needed to lubricate our joints.

In the context of beauty, not drinking enough water dehydrates our largest organ, our skin, and can lead to the development of premature aging and wrinkles.

In the context of detoxification, if we don’t drink enough water, our bodies have a very difficult time removing waste products and toxins out of our system. Dehydration can even lead to constipation, which allows even more toxins to be absorbed from our feces into our blood stream.

It’s recommended to consume at least 80oz or 10 cups of water per day or 0.5 ounces of water per pound of body weight. This does not include caffeinated beverages like coffee, energy drinks, caffeinated tea, and soda/diet soda or alcohol, which can further dehydrate us. Other beverages like fruit juice contain too much sugar.  Great options are sparkling mineral water, plain filtered water, or fruit/herb infused water, such adding lemon wedges and mint to your water. I personally add a stevia sweetened electrolyte powder (sugar-free), such as Ultima or Xymogen’s Optimag Neuro to my water everyday as an electrolyte replenisher, but it’s not necessary for everyone. What is important is that you find something that works best for you and stick with it!

Here are some easy tips to getting your 80oz+ per day

-Buy a large water container and fill it up 2-3 times per day

-fill up all the water containers that you need to drink in a 24 hour period, so you have a visual reminder on what you need to drink before the day is over

-use timers/phone alerts for reminders

Word of caution:

Some may need to stop drinking water 3-4 hours before bed to avoid waking up multiple times during the night to use the restroom.

It’s better to drink water throughout the day than drink large quantities at once. When you first wake up in the morning, make it a habit to drink 8-16oz right when you get out of bed.

Creating the simple habit of drinking enough water per day will not only energize you, but it will help you feel and look your best!
